Tocqueville Society

"When an American needs the assistance of his fellows, it is very rare for that to be refused. When some unexpected disaster strikes a family, a thousand strangers willingly open their purses."

- Alexis de Tocqueville, Democracy in America (1835)

Overview

In 1835 Alexis de Tocqueville, a French aristocrat and philosopher, wrote Democracy in America. An observation on the American lifestyle, it told the world of the generosity and care that this young country held so dear. In 1972, United Way of America created the Alexis de Tocqueville Society in order to recognize those who have rendered outstanding service as volunteers in their community. Recognizing philanthropists who donate $10,000 or more to the United Way, the members of this society truly embody the American spirit de Tocqueville spoke of.

UWGG Tocqueville Society continues to provide leadership thru giving, advocating, and volunteering in our community. Today, 5 members of nearly 150 belong to the Million Dollar Roundtable. Members of this elite group exemplify leadership in philanthropy. They are among the United Way movement's most outstanding and engaged partners. Creating lasting changes and addressing root causes, this group of individuals has contributed $1 million each to United Way of Greater Greensboro.

In addition to their exceptional financial contribution, these members have served United Way of Greater Greensboro for many years volunteering and advocating.

The Tocqueville Society fosters, promotes and recognizes the vital importance of our community. Their continued commitment and like-minded focus, together in "one voice" challenges them to become change agents right here in Greensboro-improving the lives of those in need!
